Abstract
The legend of the Child of Urashima, which originated from Nihon-shoki, has worked as a kind of proto-text in Japanese literature. When the legend is used in Genji-monogatari, a subtle interaction between narrative and history brings about the "truth in fiction." In adapting the legend for her own story, Murasaki-Shikibu more often turned to the annotations and interpretations of Nihon-shoki than the chronicle itself. She did so because her intention was not to write a prosaic description of history but to show the truth behind historical phenomena.
