Abstract

In March 1907, the monthly "Bunsho-sekai" featured a special issue entitled "Shasei-to-shaseibun". Although in the preface it treated naturalism favorably and respectfully, saying "It is now the major literary movement," the magazine interestingly enough brought to the surface the problems of that movement. Almost at the same period, Kyoshi Takahama was about to convert to romanticism just because he felt the limitations of naturalism. In this essay, I will consider the meaning of the special issue of "Bunsho-sekai", which was then called the stronghold of naturalism, as well as that of Takahama's literary conversion.
