For a nation-state, the representation of its violence toward minority peoples is always problematic. And it is especially so for a country such as Australia, which is a young settler country with only a short history. Aboriginal people have been excluded from the national history of Australia for a long time, and it was only in the 1960s that the nation started to treat its negative history toward the Aboriginal people as a critical issue. In this article, I focus on the historical experience of the Aboriginal people, examining how they constructed their identity amidst such social circumstances. The Aboriginal people in northern Australia have lived and worked among missionaries and were also taught by them since the beginning of the 20th century. The paper explores how the Aboriginal people experienced the changes in the attitude of other Australians toward them through their life in Christian missions. Moreover, I look at how the Aboriginal people constructed their identity through their responses to war and the land rights movement.
