Description

Screening tests for the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of some crude drugs containing volatile oils were carried out by the Whittle method. The results showed that the essential oil fraction of "Keigai (Shizonepeta tenuifolia BRIQ)" inhibited strongly both writhing and capillary permeability in mice. The essential oil of "Keigai" was found to consist mainly of d-menthone (42.9%) and l-pulegone (33.9%). Chemical separation of the essential oil fraction was carried out to clarify the active principles. The analgesic activity was found in d-menthone, and an anti-inflammatory effect was observed in l-pulegone.
