<p>This paper describes an apparatus used to measure the minimum electric spark ignition energy far combustible dust clouds. Instead of a transient suspencled dust claud, as in the conventional Hartmann tube apparatus, this one forms a curtain-1il{e, constant da~vnstream of dust in an explosion chamber by ccnTibining an ultrasonic vibrator, a sieve, and a</p><p>specially designed dust happer While passing through the gap of two electrocles placed in the middle of an explosion chamber, sparks are given to tl]e dust stream to determine its minimum ignitian energy (MIE) The concentration of a dust cloud can be easily changed by adjusting the current of the vibrator. The apparatus is equipped with two pieces of coarse metal mesh, which function as flame arresters and are placed i ust below the sieve and over the base of the explosion chamber to protect the chamber and enable the recycling of untested dust By comparing the MIE values of several 8amples of dust with those obtained by the conventianal method, the new method was confrmed to give. reliable data.</p>
