Description

Influence of vegetable protein diets for pregnant rats on the growth of the young and their improved nutritional effects were studied when half of 5% rice protein was replaced by soy protein isolate, egg albumin and milk casein. Pregnant rats were fed on the following 5% protein diets : rice (R), rice+soy protein isolate (RS), rice+ egg albumin (RA) and rice+milk casein (RC). Control was 18% protein diet of purified whole egg protein (W).<BR>All groups (R, RS, RA, RC) of pregnant rats fed on 5% protein diets could perform normal pregnancy and delivery. R and RS diets caused decreased neonatal survival. Mortality rate of the young during the period of lactation was about 17% in R, about 73% in RS groups and very low in RA and RC groups, about 5% and 0%, respectively. Further improvement of nutritional effect of protein was observed by replacing a 'half of 5% rice protein with animal protein. All these diets of 5% protein resulted significantly in reduced body weight, organ weight and lower protein, RNA and DNA contents of the liver at birth and also caused persistent growth retardation before the age of 49 days compared with the control diet.
