Description

The daily release of CO2 from the stem bark in younger internodes runs parallel with the temperature changes throughout the day, whereas CO2 release in older internodes is partly independent of temperature and occasionally is accompanied by an apparent daytime depression. On clear days in the summer, the daytime depression of CO2 release is remarkable and amounts to one half of the total CO2 release which may be expected when the diurnal fluctuation is closely dependent on temperature changes. The daytime depression becomes obscure after shading, defoliation, or severance of the stem at the base. The water conditions in the stem are discussed as an important factor related to daytime depression.
