Description

The properties of ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) cured by a newly developed hydrosilylation reaction were compared with those of EPDM cured by sulfur and peroxide. It was found that the heat aging resistance of the EPDM cured by the hydrosilylation was superior to that of sulfur-cured EPDM and was substantially comparable to that of peroxide-cured EPDM. The change of color due to the weathering test for the EPDM cured by hydrosilylation was about one-quarter to one-fifth of the color changes for sulfur and peroxide cured EPDM. After the weathering test, the blushing and cracking were observed in the sulfur- and peroxide-cured EPDM, but they were not observed in the EPDM cured by hydrosilylation. The fatigue life of EPDM cured by hydrosilylation was about one hundred times longer that that of peroxide-cured EPDM. The difference was explained by the length of cross linking. Total weight percent of volatile organic compounds in the EPDM cured by the hydrosilylation was about 4% of that for sulfur-cured one and about 15% of that for peroxide-cured one.<br>
