Description

Hemodialysis using heparin can cause HIT. For patients with HIT, heparin cannot be used to treat vascular access failure. An 80-year-old woman exhibiting swelling of her right arm and an arterio-venous graft was diagnosed with HIT one month after starting hemodialysis. Her venous pressure during hemodialysis was high. Argatroban was used during VAIVT to treat repeated vascular access failure four times. Her postoperative course was uneventful. For patients with HIT, argatroban can be used as a substitute for heparin to treat vascular access failure.
