Description
The effect of egg sac guarding by Lysiteles coronatus females on the survival of the eggs and the cost associated with guarding were determined. Females remained on their egg sacs in the folded leaves and guarded them against other arthropods. Survival was significantly lower in egg sacs from which the guarding females were experimentally removed than in those attending by females. Predation by other arthropods was attributed to the major source of mortality. It is likely that high predation pressures are responsible for the evolution of egg sac guarding in Lysiteles coronatus females. It is estimated that females lost about 11% of their weight during ten days of egg sac guarding. Thus, even though maternal care for egg sacs enhances their survival, it may cost the future reproduction of females.
