Description
This is a keynote speech for the symposium"Geography of the relation between the humans and the nature". I will present first my personal history, starting as a pure physical geographer, and finally becoming a geographer studying both the nature and the humans. Activities for the nature conservation and participation to the movement against the flood controlling project pushed by the government changed my thoughts. I criticized the geography of Japan which traditionally avoided the environmental issues, and regarded the environmental studies as "political and unsuitable" for the orthodox geography. This attitude led the traditional geography apart from the "arena" of political decision. Therefore when I tried to enter to such "arena" as a geographer, I had to fight at first. This is a reason why the title of my book summerizing my geographic activiteis of more than 25 years became "Combating geography" (Ono,2013). The latter part of the speech will discuss the<br>possibility to realize the true geography which functions as a tool to solve the environmental issues and social conflicts, through the deconstruction and reconstruction of geography. The significance and the problem of the "Integrated physical geography" (Iwata,2018a,b) will be discussed as an example. ESD (Eucation for Sustainable Development) will be enevitably a main body of geographical education in "Anthropocene", but geographically the base of ESD should be on the "Precautionary principle" which the humans got from the tragedy of Minamata disease, and the accident of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant which created a wide "Anecumene".
