Abstract

The present study examines the differences between therapeutic effects of exposure therapy in terms of (1) timing of safety behavior utilization, and (2) attention to fear stimuli. Undergraduate students with a fear of cockroaches were assigned to one of four conditions: (a) safety behavior utilization after the fear activation with attention to fear stimuli, (b) safety behavior utilization after the fear activation without attention to fear stimuli, (c) safety behavior utilization after the fear activation with attention to fear stimuli, and (d) safety behavior utilization before the fear activation without attention to fear stimuli. A series of 4 (condition)×3 (measurement period: pre-treatment, post-treatment, one-month follow-up) mixed ANOVAs for scores on measures of fear of cockroaches revealed a significant main effect of time for fear of cockroaches by behavioral approach tests; this is the main outcome. Additionally, this analysis revealed a significant trend of interaction for subjective avoidance, indicating no improvement at follow-up for groups (a) and (b), and improvement at follow-up for groups (c) and (d). Finally, the reasons for the therapeutic effects are discussed from the viewpoint of the mechanism of exposure therapy.
