Atomic clocks play important roles not only in the field of measurement and standards, but also in basic research of physics. The International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM) has updated the list of next generation atomic clocks ("the secondary representations of the second") for future redefinition of the second. We introduce the history of the definition of the secondary, the development of the optical clocks, and the international recommendation of the new secondary representations of the second.
