Abstract

A sudden decline in the population of Ryukyu-ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis ryukyuensis) harboring on Amami-oshima Island occurred in 2019 concurrently with a rapid increase in the number of migratory great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo). Since selective foraging by great cormorant has a suspected risk of causing extinction of Ryukyu-ayu, a line-technique was applied to protect the endangered species from the piscivorous predator. Consequently, the measures against great cormorant allowed Ryukyu-ayu to spawn and reproduce themselves. Our approach of investigation revealed the line-technique is effective.
