Description

Recent researches emphasize altruistic aspects of justice, but we argue that these aspects stem from the motive associated with long-term selfish benefits. Therefore, after activation of justice concept by using priming procedure, it is possible that people might evaluate more positively selfish and unfair behaviors as well as altruistic and fair behaviors. In this research, we investigate the effects of different kinds of priming (justice vs. fairness vs. control condition) and fair-unfair money distribution (achieved vs. retributive vs. equal vs. restorative distributional situation) by an ingroup member on evaluation of this member’s behavior. The results showed that participants in the justice condition compared with those in the control condition evaluated ingroup member’s behaviors more positively, but not in fairness condition. These results suggested that justice concept has selfish aspects and has psychological functions justifying unfair behaviors.
