The purpose of this study is to prepare effective measures to successfully cope with school violence by examining student experiences of school violence and its causes. The participants were middle school students in Korea. An investigation was made into how male and female students are different from each other in patterns of violence experienced or committed and the causes of that violence. The results are as follows: 1) Students who were victims of school violence suffered more than those who committed it. For every violence pattern, male students suffered from or committed school violence more than female students. 2) The patterns of violence that students suffered from most frequently were extortion of money or goods (58.4%), followed by verbal violence (52.4%). On the other hand, the experienced school violence pattern that students committed was mainly psychological violence (49.8%), followed by verbal violence (45.3%). 3) The most common causes of school violence were social factors in general, folloed by school factors, personal factors, and family factors, in descending order of frequency.
