Description

The hsiao-tzu in Chin-wên in Hsi-chou is expressed variously : ① hsiao-tzu ②, ③ and some of ① have been interpreted as literally " little child ", while ④, ⑤, ⑥, and the others of ①, as the names of the government office, because hsiao-tzu was recorded shu 属 under Ssŭ-ma 司馬 Chou-li 周礼。 In this article, I have made an examination of these problems as to hsiao-tzu, and arrived at the conclusions as follows. ④ the title of those who were descended from the Chou dynasty. ⑤ the title of those who were descended from the subjects of the Chou dynasty or the sub-vassals. ⑥: a kind of ⑤. ③ : used by those who had the title of ④, when they called themselves against the Chou dynasty. ① : some was the name of the group which was formed by those who had the title of ④. others meant "young men". ② : derived from ①, and used when the king, the lords and the subjects of the Chou dynasty called themselves modestly. And Yu-ssŭ 有𤔲 in Chin-wên was the general name of the government office. Judging from these facts, I should say that the lordship in Hsi-chou was formed by both the kinship (exemplified by hsiao-tzu) and the official relation (exemplified by Yu-ssu), and that their stratified mechanism was the structure of the government.
