Abstract

Radio is not so popular today among young people as it used to be. But auditory imagination has been one of the Japanese cultural tradition since the times of Man'yoshu. In Edo period we had haikai which also featured auditory imagination. Although radio is not influential as TV in terms of mass communication, it played a very important role during the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake giving crucial infrastructural information to the listeners who had no access to home electricity and the other mass media. What is more, since radio program tends to address itself to individual listeners rather than to mass audience, it can give a great deal of intimacy and reassurance. In addition, radio can play another major role as a local media based in local communities because of its relatively inexpensive production cost and its mobility.
