Description

The objective of the current study is to review the factor structure and item configuration in the parent-child communication scale, which can be used in studies for the well-being of children. The sample was composed of 3,000 elementary school students (from grades one to six) who are attending eight schools in City A in Korea. Placement method was used for the survey, which returned 2,385 responses. The survey questions involved the respondents' sex, grade level, and parent-child communication scale. In terms of statistical analysis, data from 1,760 responses without missing values were used to conduct exploratory factor analysis to extract factor structure, whose results were reviewed using confirmatory factor analysis to calculate the suitability of the factor structure data. As a result, a secondary factor model comprising three factors and thirteen items was established, with "pleasant communication," "unpleasant communication," and "uncomfortable communication" as the primary factors, and "parent-child communication" as the secondary factor (RMSEA : 0.081, CFI : 0.954, TLI : 0.942). The study develops the results of the statistical analysis to suggest ways to encourage positive parent-child communication.
