Description

A fidget spinner is popular toy, and many people have the habit of rotating it. The aim of this study was to find out why people are addicted to the fidget spinner by comparing the brain activites related with other addictions (e.g., alchorism, gambling). We created non-magnetic fidget spinners for evalutationg change in brain activities (cerebral blood flow) while spinning a fidget spinner under magnetic resonance imaging. Our data indicated that activities of insula cortex were systematicaly modulated by the shape of the fidget spinner, which had different level of pleasure. In addition, some reward related regions (nucleus accumbens and caudate nucleus) changed their activation while "rotating" the spinner. These activities could contribute to the addiction to the fidget spinner and this result might shed the light on the neural mechanisms underlying habitual and addictive behaviour.
