The purpose of this study was to define the role of psychiatric social worker at the time of promotional discharge support, and to examine how promotional discharge support should function in the future. Semi-structured interviews were conducted on three psychiatric social workers at mental health welfare centre. Practises of the psychiatric social workers and factors that prevented psychiatric patients from discharging being revealed, the practises and factors were classified by the time of discharge support. As a result, it was unravelled that the patients had anxieties about concrete things of their lives with vague apprehensions, lacking prospects for discharge support at first. On the other hand, looking into the patients' situation from various angles, the psychiatric social workers motivated the patients and managed their lives, and also, they assisted their families of the patients simultaneously. The psychiatric social workers kept in close contact and shared information with relevant professions in the process. In conclusion, the role of psychiatric social worker is building relation among a patient and his family early and promoting discharge support following the lead of patient from admission to discharge.
