Description

This study aims to trace the genealogy of the word “ikizurasa” beyond the specialized fields. “Ikizurasa” is a Japanese compound word of “ikiru” and “tsurasa”. The former means “to live”, “to be”, “to survive”, “to exist”, “to experience”, etc. The latter adds the meaning “difficult”, “hard”, and “painful” to the former. Many researchers have discussed “ikizurasa” based on by how the word have been used. However, their premises are limited only to studies of the genealogy of the word in so-called “specialized fields”. Therefore, this study will go into the genealogy of the word “ikizurasa” beyond the specialized fields. We will be using newspaper articles for analysis. First, we overviewed how and in what context the word “ikizurasa” has been used in the general society. The overview leads to three hypotheses regarding the genealogy of the word “ikizurasa”. In order to develop our understanding about these hypotheses, we examined the development of the discourse in more detail, focusing on articles relating to the youth. As a result, the following became clear. (1) The word “ikizurasa” cannot be understood only in the relation with “the problems”. (2) We cannot understand simply whether “ikizurasa” is regarded as “the problem”, what kind of “the problem” when “ikizurasa” is regarded as “the problem”, and what should be done to deal with it. (3) 2007-2009 was a turning point for the word “ikizurasa”. These points prompt us to reconsider the viewing “ikizurasa” as the problem before discussing “ikizurasa”. Standing from this perspective frees us from the view that “ikizurasa” is related to the specific “problems”. This allows for us to grasp “ikizurasa” that otherwise cannot be grasped by the existing framework, and to learn the “ikizurasa” of people who are not considered to have the specific “problems”.
