This paper reports on the “Connecting Foreign Residents with the Local Community: Welcome to Japanese Nursery and Daycare Centers” Project which was implemented as a University of Tsukuba Social Contribution Project in FY2021. The project aims to identify the communication problems that foreign parents experience in Japanese childcare settings and the challenges raised in addressing them and to work with the local community to resolve these issues. The paper reports on the activities of the 10-month project dividing it into the two phases of tsunagaru (linking) and tsunageru (connecting) and discusses the findings of the project members in terms of the trajectory of their reinterpretations of the project which they formed over these phases. We will also report on the “transformations” that occurred in the individual project members as well as the project representative based on the encounters and dialogues that took place throughout the project’s activities.
