Abstract

This research is aimed at,as a means of excavating the documents that exist in kindergartens that opened during the Meiji Period in Yamaguchi Prefecture and nalysing those regarding Japan's first private Buddhist-affiliated kindergarten,clarifying the historical background and the human relations that influenced the kindergarten's establishment.The article first provides an overview of the inception of kindergartens in Japan in general,and in Yamaguchi Prefecture in particular,during the Meiji Period.It then focuses on Kaho(Marifu)indergarten,which was established as Japan's oldest Buddhist-affiliated kindergarten,in order to examine the historical background and the people involved.The research revealed that the establishment of Kaho(Marifu) Kindergarten had been influenced by the historical background of Yamaguchi Prefecture(the Choshu Domain) in the Meiji Period and by the relationships with many capable talents that emerged from the end of the Edo Period toward the Meiji Restoration.
