Abstract

L2-learners of Swedish language sometimes get blocked when reading new unknown texts and have difficulties in conceiving the text content. They do not seem to consult the international lexicon or their knowledge about the surrounding world, as experienced readers unconsciously do when reading a text. My intention with this paper is to suggest a set of reading strategies to be taught to L2-learners as a support for improved text comprehension. By using learning strategies, learners are able to use their already acquired knowledge in new situations and in that way, acquire new knowledge. As a result the learners are getting more successful. In formulating the strategies my guidelines has been a language developing approach. The reading strategies themselves are based on both the strategies experienced readers unconsciously use when reading a text as well as the supportive activities language teachers are recommended to perform during text reading with L2-learners. The suggested reading strategies to be taught to L2-leamers are the following: a) Which text content can you expect in this text considering the headline and the first sentence of the text? b) Which verbs/nouns can you expect in a text about X? Are you able to understand parts of words you don't know? c) Which text type and genre is this text? In which contexts can you find this text? d) What kind of already acquired knowledge can you use to understand the text? e) What is the object with this text? What does the author communicate with this text? Some of the strategies presuppose cultural knowledge, especially about text types and text genres, which are dependent of cultural knowledge. It is therefore important to also teach L2-leamers about text types, genres and text templates and their typical linguistic feature together with the language.
