Description

The Japanese Association of Student Counseling conducted its triennial survey of student counseling institutions at universities, junior colleges, and special training colleges in Japan. In this ninth survey, the rate of student counseling institutions is about the same as in the previous survey and has not changed significantly over the past several years. While some indicators show some improvement in the assignment and employment of counselors, others, such as school type and size, show a more unstable situation. In terms of client utilization, the annual number of clients decreased at about half of the institutions and increased at about 20% of the institutions due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). The activities of student counseling institutions were similar to previous trends. However, a new trend was that counselors are trying new activities to support students suffering from the coronavirus pandemic, such as distance counseling and the use of the Web, and that these services are showing good results.
