Abstract

This paper deals with three examples of the preservation and utilization of cultural heritage in the UK (mainly England and Scotland). One is the National Trust that provides various plans to raise public awareness of cultural heritage rooted in daily life. The other is the examples of a university and a college in the UK, which suggest effective ways of preserving and utilizing their historical buildings and furniture. These examples provide us with useful points for considering the future plans of the preservation and utilization of the Kyushu University Museum’s historical furniture collection. For sustainable “open preservation” promoted by the museum and for the future renewal of the museum building as part of the university’s historical buildings, the following aspects are pointed out: one is the need for citizens’ participation and public discussion, and the other is more detailed research into and analysis of the preceded examples of British universities and colleges.
