Abstract

In an area with historical townscape it is usually difficult to balance the preservation and improvement of convenience and living environment. Improvement plan made for Shuri-kinjo district in Naha city have been promoted step by step. First step was the designation of townscape improvement area and construction of bypass road beside the historical area. Second step was to construct two roads to approach inside the area. Third step in 2005 was an unique one. It was a plan to build new narrow streets along the existing streets including stone walls with historical shape inside new streets. The plan was made to promote the restoration of historical townscape and improvement of facility and living environment simultaneously.
