Description
The first choice for treatment of uncomplicated early syphilis is intramuscular injection of penicillin benzathine; however, it is not available in Japan. Oral administration of amoxicillin is recommended as an alternative regimen. However, there is little evidence of use of this regimen. In this study, the efficacy of oral amoxicillin was evaluated in 158 patients with early syphilis. Among 105 patients with rapid plasma reagin (RPR) at diagnosis of ≥8.0 R.U., 104 patients (99.0%) were serologically cured within 6 months. Among 53 patients with RPR at diagnosis of <8.0 R.U., 49 patients (92.5%) were serologically cured within 6 months. Oral amoxicillin demonstrated good efficacy in patients with early syphilis.
