Description

A generalized linear model (GLM) was established for the relationship between drilling resistance of decayed wood and four physical properties of the wood. Wood specimen of Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica ), Hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa), Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla), of 10(L)×20(R)×25(T)mm in dimension, decayed for 0 to 12 weeks by brown rot fungi (Fomitopsis palustris) were used for the experiment. The apparatus, Resistograph® was employed for boring, and the drilling resistance value during the boring by a three-pointed drill bit of 3mm in rotation diameter was measured. For the model configuration, average of drilling resistance was set as the criterion variable and the parameters, oven dry density, mass loss, moisture content and average annual ring width, respectively, were set as explanatory variables. After the investigation of the significance of the explanatory variables, GLM's standard partial regression coefficients were calculated so that they match Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC). It was revealed, the parameters, oven dry density, mass loss and moisture content were significant, and the coefficient values for them were, 0.57, 0.44 and 0.06, respectively. The feasibility of the model for the estimation of mass loss was suggested.
