Description
We examined the post-amputation walking ability in 51 of 71 CLTI patients who were admitted to our cardiology department between April 2010 and February 2015 to undergo lower extremity amputation and post-amputation rehabilitation. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for the following factors: age, comorbidities, the level of amputation, non-weight bearing period, changes in walking ability associated with the amputation level, and isometric knee extension strength of the contralateral leg. Walking ability was preserved in 90%, 100%, 100%, and 71% of the cases of toe, transmetatarsal, Chopart, and below-knee amputation, respectively. Previous studies reported that a higher amputation level results in a greater reduction of walking ability. In our study, the walking preservation rate in patients who underwent lower extremity amputation was superior to that in previous reports at any amputation level. Our study suggested that rehabilitation improves the walking ability preservation rate.
