Abstract

The author says that the emergency of modern society in Japan was the result of the gradual development of various branches of industry under the feudal system, where the cultivation of cereal plants was the key industry. The development of cotton production in the Yedo or Tokugawa Period was one of the significant examples of such a development. The development of cotton production has, however, a history of troublesome events. It was achieved only through the struggles fought by peasants against various barriers imposed under feudalism. Such a movement is revealed in the history of the development of cotton production in Hirano-gō, where the peasants played the role of torch-bears.
