Abstract

The Korean Christian Church in Japan (KCCJ), which withdrew from the United Church of Christ in Japan and was reestablished immediately after World War II, changed its name from "Cho-Sun" to "Dae-Han" at its 4th General Assembly held in October 1948. This shows that the General Assembly responded immediately to the founding of a nation called the Republic of Korea ("Dae-Han Min-Guk") on August 15, an event occurring only a couple months before the General Assembly. Around 1970, a quarter of a century and a whole new generation later, criticism toward the church arose among the Zainichi Youth in the KCCJ. A central issue of this criticism was the problem of "National Identity."
