Abstract

This paper proposes a two-way ranging (TWR) method with successive round-trip-time (RTT) estimation using phase of multi-frequency signals in line-of-sight (LOS) envoronments. In the proposed method, each of two nodes transmits signals using multiple carrier frequencies and measures phases of the received signals. The proposed method improves accuracy of RTT successively using the phases of two frequencies which is updated to increase frequency gap in each estimation step, and finally estimates RTT accurately using the phase of a single carrier frequency, leading to accurate ranging. Numerical results show that the proposed method achieves 1 mm ranging accuracy at lower quality of received signal than the conventional method which uses phase of a single frequency signal only. It is also shown that the number of frequencies required for 1 mm accuracy is dependent on minimum quality of received signal for ranging.
