Description

This study aims to examine the process of changes in the local knowledge and perceptions of farmers in an agro-pastoral society (north-central Namibia) in order to understand the process of innovations in indigenous agriculture in rural Africa. Specifically, this study clarifies how local knowledge affects the perception of local farmers regarding the acceptance or rejection of new agricultural techniques proposed by the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) agricultural project conducted in Namibia. In the study villages, farmers conducted several trials of new agricultural practices using local knowledge about cultivation and wetland environment after new agricultural techniques were suggested by the project. At the same time, there was a significant gap between the proposed techniques and the farmers' practices on the ground. Among the newly suggested techniques, many farmers adopted rice cultivation, as few farmers are knowledgeable about rice cultivation in this area. Hence, they tentatively attempted it just as a part of their everyday trial of introducing foreign crops or techniques. Meanwhile, another novel technique consisting of planting pearl millet or sorghum together with rice along the edge of small seasonal wetlands was rejected. Farmers deemed this technique unreasonable based on their own local knowledge about the features of these crops. Therefore, in this case, their local knowledge serves in filtering new techniques.
