Abstract

In this paper, I analyze the relationship between the church system and religious beliefs in the organization of Konkokyo with reference to Kiyomi Morioka’s theory of religious organization. Consequently, the following conclusions were drawn. In the organization of Konkokyo, the faith’s relationship-based factional connection, which Morioka pointed out as the original organization of the religious movement in Japan, works. On the other hand, Konkokyo established a horizontally connected church system embodying the belief that “the minister and church are equal in the presence of the deity that Konkokyo believers worship,” which religious beliefs should be. Konkokyo’s religious beliefs may reflect the idea of an “equal life.” In Konkokyo, the relationship of faith, called tetsuzuki, was regarded as “pure belief” and was denied use in the church system, suggesting that religious beliefs have normative power over the church system and that there was an antagonism between the faith’s relationship-based factional connection and the religious belief of equality in modern Japan.
