Description

This paper investigates how Tokyo Electric Co. Ltd. established the sales companies in the 1930s, where their offices were located, and who their board members were, through contemporaneous documents such as commercial registrations published in the official gazette, gentlemen's records at that time, Electric Almanac (Denki Nenkan) and other yearbooks, and so on. Tokyo Electric first established three sales companies in Tokyo in April 1930, and by the year 1939, had divided all of Japan (including Korea, but excluding Hokkaido and Taiwan) into eight blocks, each of which was controlled by a regional sales company. Some sales companies were established by integrating and internalizing leading wholesalers, while others were established from scratch, without utilizing the people and organizations of such wholesalers, in order to avoid their influence. Various forms of sales companies suggest the complicated relationship between Tokyo Electric and wholesalers in each area.
