Abstract

In the present study, the driving characteristics of impact drive mechanism (IDM) using a shape memory alloy (SMA) wire were investigated, focusing on the possibility of its downsizing. Specifically, first, the method of power supply was changed from the wire feeding used in our previous study to a direct power supply from rails to reduce the influence of wire tension on the driving performance. Three SMA-type IDMs with different sizes (large, middle, and small) were manufactured, and the changes in movements were measured using a laser displacement sensor when changing the applied voltage. The results demonstrated that the step size and the range of driving voltage varied due to the size of IDM, suggesting the possibility of its downsizing.
