Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of valued action and perfectionism on depressive symptoms and sports performance of college athletes. A total of 187 college athletes completed the Valuing Questionnaire (Progress), Multidimensional Perfectionism Cognition Inventory (personal standards, concern over mistakes), Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology Self-Report (QIDS-SR), and self-rating of sports performance. Structural equation modeling revealed that concern over mistakes predicted an increase in QIDS-SR and a decrease in sports performance. However, personal standards showed an increase sports performance. In addition, higher levels of progress resulted to higher levels of sports performance, which was associated with lower levels of QIDS-SR. These findings suggest that clarifications of values and interventions for perfectionism may lessen depressive symptoms and improve sports performance. However, further research is necessary to refine this model.
