Description

Although esophageal stent migration is a common complication, it rarely migrates distally to the stomach, and cases of small bowel obstruction caused by migrated stents are rare. Risk factors for stent migration include improvement of the obstruction at the esophageal cancer site due to the anti-tumor effect of chemotherapy and use of slippery stent materials, such as covered stents. In particular, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), which have recently begun to be used for treating esophageal cancer are expected to have a stronger anti-tumor effect than conventional cytotoxic drugs, and there is some concern about the increased risk of stent migration in patients receiving ICI therapy. In this case report, we report a case in which a patient with advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who underwent stenting followed by ICI therapy required surgery because the stent slipped and migrated into the small intestine, causing small bowel obstruction.
