Description

We examined how seiza (sitting-on-heels) would influence students in classroom setting, as compared to agura (sitting with cross-legged) and normal sitting. In Study 1, thirty-six volunteers sat on the same chair, adopted three postures in a counter-balanced order, and read articles or listened to audio lectures for 5 minutes each. They felt less sleepy in the seiza condition than in the cross-legged or the normal sitting condition (ps < .02). Besides they felt more physical fatigue in the seiza condition (p = .013), but as for mental fatigue, there was no difference with other conditions. In Study 2, the seiza group expressed less sleepiness (ps < .05) and more pain (ps < .002) than the normal sitting group both during and 10 minutes after they adopted a seiza posture, whereas there were no significant differences between postures in physical and mental fatigue, letter fluency test, and Stroop task. The seiza caused leg pain but inhibited sleepiness, although pain did not predict changes in sleepiness.
