Abstract

This study aims at examining how hospitality businesses have endeavored to solve issues of the external environment, which were faced by them, and how these hospitality businesses have provided service concepts to meet visitors’ needs. This study addresses these issues by analyzing the period from 1945 to 1977 in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture. <br> Since 1972, when Okinawa was returned to Japan, the Expo ‘75 was held in the Motobu Peninsula (in the north of Okinawa); therefore, income from tourists continuously increased, making tourism the most important industry in Okinawa. However, after the Expo ‘75, the number of visitors to the island tremendously decreased, resulting in the bankruptcy of a large number of hospitality businesses.<br> This study first explains how the hospitality cluster in Okinawa was formed against the historical background. Further, this study led to the discovery that the hospitality industry in Naha City contributed to tourism cluster formation in the late 50s and 60s. Moreover , it was found that the service concept of an “international tourism destination” is supposed to be perceived by Japanese mainlanders. Finally, it was discovered that the hospitality industry in Naha City played an important role in the formation of resort destinations in Okinawa.
