Description
With rapid progress in the understanding of cancer genomics, the need for cancer genetic services has been increasing from both public populations and medical providers. However, the availability of such referrals is limited at the University hospitals and large cancer centers in Japan. Since October 2017, we have established a hereditary tumor counseling office at the Kobe City Medical Center General Hospital, where genetic counseling for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer and Lynch syndrome is being done. This new establishment was facilitated by the introduction of genetic testing for the BRCA1/2 gene as a companion diagnostic tool for olaparib and the microsatellite instability test as a companion diagnostic tool for pembrolizumab. The target diseases are expected to expand according to the increase of genetic testing panels in the near future. Great effort must be employed to make genetic counseling easily accessible to patients with hereditary tumors so that they can receive appropriate medical care, such as appropriate surveillance and risk reductive surgery.
