Description

In “Izumo-kitayama-sanchi” mountainous district, where sika deer lives, in a study site where dead pines caused by pine wilt disease had cut down, the seedlings of Pinus densiflora, Vernicia cordata, Styrax japonica, Neolitsea sericea, Melia azedarach, Machilus thunbergii, which grow naturally in this area, were planted in December 2013. After planting, browsing pressure by sika deer in the tree species was investigated from May to December 2014. As a result, P. densiflora did not receive a strong feeding damage. But, the shoots were often browsed. This seemed to affect the growth of shoots. V. cordata did not quite received the feeding damage. But, the survival rate of the seedings was low, 50%. Therefore, it was thought that much regard should be payed to where V. cordata is planted. In S. japonica, the dead rate of seedlings was low, but the feeding preference was high. Therefore, S. japonica seemed to grow not well ahead. In N. sericea, the feeding preference was low and the survival rate of the seedings was high. Thus, N. sericea was thought to be the most suitable species for planting. In M. azedarach and M. thunbergii, the stems of almost of all seedlings were browsed and some seedlings were killed. In regenerating forest early without tree shelters and fences in the habitat of sika deer, P. densiflora, V. cordata and N. sericea should be planted in mixture, in consideration of feeding preference, survival rate of seedlings and forest biodiversity.
