Description

The Detchi-system supplied the business houses of Osaka with the labor power that led to Osaka's prosperity as a commercial city during the Edo period. It is also said to have been the fountainhead for the "Japanese management System" after the Secound World War . This paper aims to reconstruct the Detchi-system through interviews with persons who have actual experience of it. I will consider how the Detchi-system operated as an education sustem which reproduced "Osaka entrepreneurs", in particular the ways in which the "mentality" of "Osaka entrepreneurs" was passed on to future generations. In part I, I offer a brief outline of the nature of 'Osaka entrepreneurs" and the manner in which they came about. In part Ⅱ, I investigate the Detchi-system . from its formation to its disappearance. I examine the realities of the system through interviews with informants who actually experienced the Detchi. In part Ⅲ, I consider in detail the "mentalities" of the "Osaka entrepreneurs" and the ways in which they were taught.
