Description

The aim of this public lecture is to clarify the characteristics of modern Quaker pacifism under the influence of Liberalism and to analyze its theological positions that Reinhold Niebuhr harshly criticized, and which some present-day Quaker pacifists still hold. What I show in the lecture is that liberal Quakers have considered human nature to be divine and innocent, breaking the tension between God and man and ignoring the deep dimensions of human existential limitations. Furthermore, their pacifist stance ends in returning the unbridgeable gap between oneself and others to the mere realm of calculability or controllability. Consequently, Quaker pacifism becomes nothing more than a (group-) psychological strategy to violently use nonviolence.
