Description

The aim of the study was to develop categories to analyze sandtrays, based on 646 photographs of sandtrays from case studies of 77 elementary school students with neuroses published up to October 2017. Five coding and 30 category revision meetings were held, and these generated 16 form categories and 13 scene categories. Form categories included use of sand and the amount or arrangement of items, whereas scene categories included those on attack and destruction, scenes such as a “Festival/Event” and “Animals in Fenced Area,” and fields such as “City/Town/Village” and “Interior.” These categories were similar to existing categories created in a top-down format and to current theories. Some form categories had insufficient inter-rater agreement, but all of the generated categories can be used for empirical research and for understanding the effect of a sandtray in actual sandplay therapy.
