Abstract

Seabed disturbance caused by bottom trawling (dredge net fishery) was considered as a new nutrient supply mechanism in Osaka Bay, and the nutrient load due to trawling was calculated based on fishery operational records and bottom sediment survey data. Three-dimensional flow and water quality simulations were also conducted to quantitatively evaluate the effects of fishery on water quality and primary production in the bay. As a result, it was estimated that the nutrient load by the bottom disturbance accounted for only 1-3% of the total load to the bay in summer, while it ranged from 4-14% in winter. Seabed disturbance caused by fishery increased nitrogen concentration and primary production along the eastern coastal area in winter, and also increased primary production of the entire bay by about 1.03%, indicating that the effects of dredge net fishery have a non-negligible effect on the lower ecosystem at the bay scale.
