Abstract

This paper describes a self-learning style course in primary object oriented programming education using a course management system. In the course, we organized teaching materials with introduction to a learning content using short stories and utilized them. The story is written in text format in HTML pages as teaching materials. There are two roles of the stories. The first one is to clarify the situation that the concept is applicable to and the problem is placed. The second one is to make contents familiar to students. We have used the story-based teaching materials in our courses for four years and the four years practice shows that stories helped students with understanding situations and feeling contents familiar. We also found that story-based teaching materials are more effective in self-learning style courses than ordinary lecture style courses.
