Description

This paper examines the modern transformation of sacred space by looking at the transition of the more dangerous (in terms of traffic, etc.) sections of the Shikoku pilgrimage, with two objectives: to consider the issue of the modern transformation of sacred space from the perspective of mobility and road space, and to clarify some aspects of the modern transformation of the Shikoku pilgrimage. This transition can be seen by comparing descriptions of the more dangerous parts of the Shikoku Pilgrimage in the Edo period to those descriptions of the modern Shikoku Pilgrimage. As a result, three characteristics were found: (1) descriptions of dangerous sections of the pilgrimage such as mountain roads and slopes that are common to both; (2) descriptions of dangerous sections such as rivers and seas that were seen in the Edo period but not in modern times; and (3) descriptions of dangerous sections such as tunnels and car roads that were not seen in the Edo period but can be seen in modern times. As the times changed from the Edo period to the present, the meaning of these “dangerous” sections has changed. In this paper, I have clarified part of the modern meaning of the multidimensional spatial composition surrounding the Shikoku Pilgrimage.
